The thing about the infamous waterbed is that it has some unique properties that make it more likely to need better care and attention than a traditional mattress.  For this reason alone, it is important to consider the type of use and abuse your mattress can be expected to endure.  If you are thinking about one for your kids’ room, think again.  While they are safe and completely legitimate beds to use, there are just some restrictions that would be best left for an adult’s bedroom.  One such idea is the simple fact that the waterbed can leak or be punctured.  This is definitely something that is more likely in a child’s room where they like to jump on the bed, play around and use it as some sort of prop in the movie that is their life.

A waterbed mattress also is shaped differently than a traditional mattress.  A waterbed doesn’t have as ‘sharp’ a corner as the conventional mattress.  The waterbed is more like the futon in this regard.  And, like a futon, waterbed sheets are special in that they need to ensure that they are tall enough to wrap beneath the mattress and can even be specially stitched to provide a more rounded corner.  You might also choose to use the special pieces that can clip or strap beneath the mattress to keep the sheets in place.  For the top side of the waterbed, there are other considerations.  You might like to purchase a waterbed mattress pad, just another accessory that will ensure your perfect comfort.

The type of mattress that you find most comfortable is really the best one to choose.  There are so many differing opinions from orthopedists to chiropractors touting the benefits and advantages of certain ones.  In the end, if it is supportive and allows you to get a good night’s sleep, waking up feeling refreshed, then it is a good mattress.  You don’t really need a degree in “sleepology” to figure this out.  This has become even more obvious with the marketing of all sorts of mattresses today:  Sleep number, coiled spring, futon, latex, memory foam and others.  Choose one that feels good and enjoy your sleep.
