From Shop To Home – Getting Your New Pine Bedroom Furniture Into Your Bedroom Safely
March 11, 2010GuestPoster Comments OffDoesn’t it feel good buying a brand new set of pine bedroom furniture? But don’t be too relaxed yet. Shopping for the perfect bed and wardrobe for your bedroom is just the first step. It is an important first step, but there is more to come. The real complications start from here on – how to get your brand new furniture from the shop all the way to your bedroom.
Many people just think, “But I’ve already paid for delivery.” But, as they say, “No battle plan survives contact with the enemy.” In this case, the enemy is a combination of the shop’s standard operating procedure and how well their staff carry it out as well as whether the delivery plan you paid for is what you think it is. Whenever you buy any kind of furniture, these are two points you need to keep in mind:
- How to get your new bed and wardrobe (plus whatever other items you bought) home into your bedroom without damaging them
- Ensuring that your existing furnishings do not get damaged while moving out your old furniture and moving in your new furniture
Delivering your furniture from the shop to your porch or driveway is part of any delivery service. No one argues about this much. But not many people realize how important things like the following are NOT included:
- Removing your old bedroom furniture
- Assembling your new bedroom furniture
- Moving the new furniture into your bedroom
Removing your old bedroom furniture
Who is going to do this? Do you expect the delivery man to do this for you? Even if you want to pay him extra to help you, he may not be able to. For one thing, he may be part of some union. For another, he may be on a tight schedule, so if this removal is not part of your delivery agreement with the furniture shop when you bought your furniture, he may not be able to help even if he wants to.
Here is one more point for you to think about – is your old furniture flat-pack or is it a fitted bedroom furniture package? If it is fitted, you may need to go to extra effort to have it removed. You may actually need to find a professional to help you rip it out and you may even need to do some basic renovations and repairwork before you can receive your new pine bedroom furniture.
Assembling your new bedroom furniture
Most furniture sold nowadays is delivered disassembled in crates or cardboard boxes. Who will assemble your new bed and wardrobe? Will you do it yourself? Is your new pine bedroom furniture the fitted type which requires professional installation? By rights, the furniture shop you bought your new stuff from should have told you and arranged things with you. But if you got a rookie salesman …
Where will you assemble your new furniture? The best is to have your assembly point inside your bedroom, but do you have the space to do this? If you need to do the assembly outside the bedroom, are you sure you can get everything moved in? For example, is your bedroom entrance large enough to fit your new bed, wardrobe, etc.
Moving the new furniture into your bedroom
Especially if your new pine bedroom furniture comes pre-assembled, how will you get it moved into your bedroom? Do you have enough brawny friends to help you move it in, especially if your bedroom is on the second floor or third floor of your house? Can you clear a safe path all the way from your main door to your bedroom door?
Making sure your existing furnishings do not get damaged
Do not forget about your existing decor. Anything fragile (e.g. paintings along the hallway, your grandfather clock, your shiny vintage piano facing the main door of your house, your $1000 corner speakers, etc.) should be packed away or moved aside for safety. If it is something that cannot be moved, protect it by wrapping it with a thick foam pad and tough, thick cloth.
Remember to also remove any loose rugs and make sure the corner edges of your carpet are properly flat on the floor for every trip you make between the main door and your bedroom door. Make sure to remove anything that can trip up whoever is moving your furniture.
When you buy new bedroom furniture, remember that shopping for it is the fun part. You still have to get it into your bedroom without breaking anything.
